The Prelim examination is completely objective type and includes two papers CSAT and General Studies. The marks of General studies are taken into consideration for screening to main examination round at the same time CSAT is minimum qualifying in nature.

Coming to the main exam, there are 9 papers in which two are optional. The main exam is descriptive in nature. Besides this, regional language paper and English language paper are qualifying in nature. IAS Exam Eligibility Criteria

(For the IAS and IPS examination)

Indian Aspirants who have any degree from any well reputed university or institute of India are eligible.

Indian Aspirants who have equivalent qualification or any qualification from deemed university.

Even the final year students and the aspirants who are waiting for their results to arrive are also eligible. The results must be submitted during the application form submission for main exams. There are no percentage or marks criteria for applying for any of these services.

(For other examinations)

  1. Aspirant should be citizen of India Or,
  2. Aspirant should be subject of Bhutan Or,
  3. Aspirant should be subject of Nepal Or,
  4. Aspirant must be Tibetan refugee who came to India in order to get settle forever in India and came to India before 1st January, 1962.
  5. Aspirant who is Indian person but migrated from East African countries, Sri lanka, Burma, Pakistan, in order to settle down in India forever.

IAS Exam – Age Limit

The aspirant should have at least minimum age of 21 years and the age criteria will be determined as on 1st August every year in which the exam is conducted.

The aspirants from SC/ST and OBC category will get cumulative age relaxation. As an illustration, suppose a person is OBC and also ex service man, then he will get 5+7=12 years of extension. Now, his upper age limit will be 42 years.

UPSC Syllabus

UPSC Syllabus for prelims (Paper 1) General Studies

  1. General Science
  2. Economics: It includes demographics poverty, inclusion, sustainable development, social sector initiatives etc.
  3. Indian Polity and governance: panchayati raj, political system, Constitution of India etc.
  4. Environment: It will comprise of general science, general issues on climatic change, biodiversity, environment ecology.
  5. Geography: It includes economic, social and physical geography.
  6. History: It includes history of India and Indian national movement.
  7. Current affairs: It comprises of matter about national and international significance, current events.

The time limit to finish the paper is 2 hours and total marks are 200.

UPSC Syllabus 2019 for Prelims CSAT Paper 2

  1. Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
  2. Data interpretation.
  3. Analytical and logical reasoning .
  4. General mental ability.
  5. Problem- solving and decision- making.

The time limit to finish the paper is 2 hours and total marks are 200.

UPSC Syllabus 2020 for main examination

The participants will get rank on the basis of marks they score in the main exam and interview stage. The UPSC main exam will consist of 1750 marks and the interview round will consists of 275 marks. There are total 9 papers in the UPSC mains out of which marks of 7 papers will be taken into account for ranking basis. Moreover, the aspirant should get minimum marks in the rest two language papers. This exam system is prescribed by the commission and every year it is undertaken in this way only. However, there is exception for the aspirants who are from north eastern states and they will have to give the English language paper only.

Indian Language Paper (Part A)

Aspirants will have to choose any one of the Indian languages which is included in the eight schedule of constitution of India. However, this exam paper is not mandatory for the aspirants who are residing in the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.

UPSC Syllabus as per the subject

There are total 7 papers which are counted for final ranking. All the papers consist of 250 marks. Two papers are optional. The syllabus of rest 5 papers is mentioned below:

  • Choose Part 1 for registration and fill the details which are asked
  • After the end of part 1 registration, the aspirant will get a registration number

  • Perform the Part 2 Registration and then fill the required details in the form
  • Upload the scanned latest photograph and signature copy in valid format
